This course focuses on one or more topics in English linguistics. The topics may be related to linguistic fields of study such as syntax, morphology, phonology, pragmatics, semantics, sociolinguistics, corpus linguistics etc. and may be addressed from a synchronic and/or diachronic perspective. In addition to the syllabus texts, students will compile their own syllabus, which is related to specific aspects of the overall topic. The syllabus forms the basis for the term paper.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the course, students have
- thorough knowledge of the topics and problems dealt with
- profound knowledge of one aspect of the topic(s) addressed in the course
- a good understanding of various linguistic theories and approaches
On successful completion of the course, students are able to
- account for the central aspects of the topic(s) dealt with
- write a fairly comprehensive paper in linguistics
Examination requirements
All obligatory tasks must be approved in order to be eligible to take the exam. An overview of the obligatory tasks will be given at the start of the term.
Teaching methods
Teaching methods may for example include lectures, seminars, oral presentations, groupwork and individual work, including the term paper. Active and regular participation is required. The estimated workload is approximately 270 hours.
Evaluation
The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1.
