Prerequisites

Students in the Bachelor's programme: 70 ECTS credits in English, of which 10 ECTS credits must be in English at advanced level (200-level). EN-122, EN-146, EN-165, EN-166, EN-167, EN-168 in addition to a course and a 200-level course, or the equivalent must be successfully completed.

Teacher-training students: EN-122, EN-146, EN-148, EN-165, EN-166, EN-167, EN-168 or the equivalent must be successfully completed.

Course contents

The bachelor's thesis builds on either texts within the fields of English-language literature or culture from various genres, periods and themes or various topics within English. Topics available for supervision may change from term to term. The course also includes relevant curricula for literature/culture or linguistics. The learning outcome is to raise the students' consciousness about the principles of academic writing of a certain length. The student's thesis must fulfill the requirements of form, structure and contents described in the department's guidelines for BA theses.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the bachelor's thesis the student has

  • in-depth knowledge about central aspects of the topic chosen.

  • knowledge about methods and theories relevant for the topic chosen.

  • insight into the field of research within the domain of the chosen topic as well as the ability to critically engage with the topic.

On completion of the bachelor's thesis the student can

  • can formulate and investigate a thesis topic in literature/culture or linguistics.

  • work independently on the chosen topic within the domains of literature/culture or linguistics.

  • reflect analytically, critically and systematically both on the topic of the thesis and on development in the chosen field.

  • retrieve relevant literature and be updated on research.

  • demonstrate expertise in genre, style and register as required for academic writing.

Examination requirements

The student must have had 2 obligatory individual tutorials and have fulfilled the requirements described in the contract for supervision. They must have attended at least 3 of the 4 workshops and have fulfilled all their contractual obligations.

Teaching methods

Independent work under supervision. Students are expected to take responsibility for their work and accept the conditions and deadlines set by the department. The workload is estimated to 270 hours.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1

Assessment methods and criteria

A written bachelor's thesis of 6000-8000 words. Submission of the thesis in accordance with the criteria set by the department. Graded assessment.
