Course contents

The course has the following focus: Training in analysing and assessing texts from various genres and conveying these texts to the pupils. The course gives an introduction to English didactics including a variety of English fiction and prose from the English-speaking world. The students will be stimulated to analyse texts and themes suitable for the youth and increase their insight into society and culture of the English-speaking world, past and present. Adaptation of varied activities and methods will be central to the course together with a focus on the role of the English teacher.

The subject in the practice period

The course also focuses on preparation for practice, planning and implementation of teaching followed by critical assessment of the taught lessons.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge: The student

  • has knowledge about the National Curriculum, national tests, mapping tools and teaching aids for English as a subject, and is able to use formative assessment

  • is familiar with literature and other cultural expressions that can be used in the teaching of children and youth in grades 5-10

  • is familiar with research and development work relevant for English as a subject in grades 5-10

  • has knowledge about ways of life, society, history and cultural expressions in English speaking countries and can communicate these adapted to the foreign language proficiency of the pupils, as well as has insight into language stimulating use of texts when teaching in grades 5-10

  • has knowledge about the importance of basic skills for learning and development and processes that enhance these skills in the English classroom

  • has knowledge about norms for academic writing and responsible use of sources

  • understands the learning potential of different learning arenas, for example artistic/aesthetic expressions, group projects and digital media

Skills: The student

  • is able to use English confidently and independently orally and in writing

  • is able to plan and lead varied and differentiated learning activities, including digital activities, that enhance in-depth learning and development of the basic skills in grades 5-10

  • is able to discuss, orally and in writing, a selection of fiction and non-fiction literature relevant in grades 5-10

  • is able to assemble and adapt information about social issues and cultural matters suited for teaching in grades 5-10

  • is able to use digital learning arenas to enhance language learning and teaching English at the initial training and in grades 5-10

General competence: The student

  • is able to teach relevant fiction and non-fiction literature and communicate in English in a way that is adapted to the grades 5-10

  • is able to reflect on his/her own learning and teaching practice in the light of fundamental ethical values and the school’s responsibility for the personal development of children and youth

  • is able to work independently and together with colleagues to advance pupils’ learning and development

  • is able to maintain and develop his/her own literary, cultural and didactic competence

Examination requirements

The 70% mandatory attendance requirement must be met. The practice period must be completed and passed. For students taking the course as a single standing module, a didactic assignment replacing the practice, must be assessed as a pass.

Teaching methods

A variety of teaching methods in large and small groups will be used in the course. The focus will be on student activities like group work, oral and written assignments, as well as digital work. There is a 70 % mandatory attendance requirement. A practice period of 20 days is included for students in the teacher education.

 

The workload is estimated at 400 hours.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1.

For students taking single standing modules: completed teacher education aimed at primary or secondary school, and the prerequisites of the course, if there are any specified.

Assessment methods and criteria

The examination consists of three parts: two submissions completed during the semester and a final oral examination. All components must be assessed as a pass, and all contribute to the final grade equally. Graded assessment. Further information about the content of the two submissions will be given when the semester starts.
