Course contents

The accounting research contributes to important debates among academics, practitioners, and policy makers. The course introduces primary topics of accounting research: Financial accounting, managerial accounting, tax, audit, and sustainability. The course will present fundamentals of how to design and carry out a research project. The main objective is to present qualitative and quantitative research methods, including data analysis.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course the student should be able to:

  • To apply qualitative and quantitative methods.

  • Understand the scope and different topics within accounting research.

  • Interpret and critically evaluate results presented in qualitative and quantitative accounting studies.

  • Evaluate ethical aspects of different research methods.

  • Formulate research questions and identify an appropriate scientific method to analyze these research questions.

  • Design a research study where theory is utilized and appropriate method is applied to analyze the data.

Examination requirements

  • Approved compulsory attendance with at least 70% attendance.

  • Research proposal written in pairs of two students.

Research proposal can be utilized in the master’s thesis of the students.

Teaching methods

Lectures and group work. Lectures are compulsory. Estimated workload is about 200 hours.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with student representatives, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1.

Assessment methods and criteria

4-hour written examination under supervision. Assessment expression: letter grade, A-F.

Due to grade requirements for state authorised auditors, a regular examination will be held both autumn and spring.
