Prerequisites

  • The student must have passed minimum 45 credits in the master’s programme before starting the internship
  • The student must have the necessary prior knowledge and competence to solve the tasks to be carried out during the internship period. The student's prior knowledge and skills are assessed by the employer through an application, CV and interview. The company prioritizes qualified applicants and grants internships on this basis.
  • A plan for the internship period must be approved by the University and the company.

Course contents

The internship is an opportunity to work in a Norwegian enterprise and offers valuable practical experience and insight into real-world professional challenges. It will put academic learning into a contextual and applied perspective. The internship work goes in parallel with classes in the fall semester and is unpaid. Student's work in the companies will be prepared, checked and supervised by a faculty member at the Faculty of Engineering and Science. There will be written contract between the student, UiA and the internship enterprise that regulates the internship period and the responsibilities between the three parties.

Learning outcomes

On the successful completion of the course, the student should:

  • have knowledge about the expectations, needs and demands of employees in working life.
  • be able to communicate and cooperate with colleagues
  • be able to carry out specific tasks in the enterprise following professional procedures and rules
  • be able to apply theoretical knowledge to solve relevant tasks in a professional enterprise
  • master tools, techniques and terminology in the field of the internship.
  • be able to describe the enterprise, its organization and main business areas using professional terminology.
  • be able to reflect on the process and methods used to carry out the tasks in the internship
  • be able to reflect on his/her professional practice, and the master’s programme’s relevance to working life.

Examination requirements

  • Attendance at a midterm internship workshop at the university.
  • Midterm status report

Teaching methods

The total workload of the internship program in the selected enterprise is approximately 300 hours. Distribution of the workload will be decided by each company in conjunction with UiA to fit with the student’s class schedule at UiA and practical needs and arrangements in the enterprise.

The main work tasks will be agreed with each company in advance but shall be related to core competences and learning outcomes of the student’s study programme.

During the internship period there will be a compulsory internship workshop with other internship students at the Faculty.

By the end of the Internship the student will submit a paper related to the specific practice experience. The total workload included preparing and writing the final paper is approximately 400 hours.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas

Assessment methods and criteria

Portfolio consisting of:

  • Application and CV
  • Documentation of a minimum of 300 hours of attendance in the enterprise, in accordance with the individual work-plan.
  • A final term paper
  • A video with an oral presentation of the internship.

The course is graded passed / not passed.

Other information

Students will have to apply for admission for this course. The selection of candidates will be done by the companies based upon grades, a motivation letter and interview. The number of internship places offered through UiA are limited. Students may also find internship places by themselves and get them approved by the Faculty.
