Prerequisites

For admission to the course, the student must have achieved a minimum of 75 ECTS from the education plan. Courses that the Master Thesis is base on must be passed. The topic and research question must be approved be the University of Agder.

Course contents

The Master Thesis shall be independent work within central topics of the study. The work shall be research oriented and increase the understanding for execution and management of larger research projects. The thesis will be presented in a report, which describes the problem, solutions, results and the work. The project will be presented orally, in public. The Master’s Thesis is evaluated according to The Norwegian Association of Higher Education Institutions recommended guidelines for evaluation of master thesis in the field om MNT-education.

Learning outcomes

The students shall after completion of the Master’s Thesis be able to plan and execute a larger project logically and efficient, and present the results in a professional manner. Through the work with the Master Thesis and the methodology seminar which is part of the work, the students will also learn to evaluate research and scientific papers, and achieved a basis to document future R&D-projects.

Teaching methods

Independent work individual or in groups (2-3 students) with project tasks, with supervision. Each project has a minimum of 5 hours mandatory mentoring. Both the students and the supervisor have a joint responsibility to make sure that these 5 mentoring sessions are competed.
Estimated workload for the average student is 27 hours per credit.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1.”

Assessment methods and criteria

Portfolio assessment with project report, project presentation, and oral examination conducted individually/in groups. Video recordings of the presentation and oral defense will be included as part of the assessment material in the portfolio. The individual components will not be given separate grades but will collectively form the basis for grading the entire portfolio. The portfolio will be given graded marks. Detailed information about the various components included in the portfolio will be provided on Canvas at the beginning of the semester.

In the event of a grade appeal, the entire portfolio, including video recordings of the presentation and oral defense, will be evaluated by a new assessment committee.

There will be no new/postponed exam for the portfolio.
