Students must have completed courses in the first year of their bachelor programme in health or social sciences.

Course contents

The course explores various theories, problems, and approaches to inclusion and diversity, both nationally and internationally, and examines their impacts on different groups in society. Students will engage in critical reflection on values, perspectives, and practices, and these theories and perspectives will be discussed in lectures and group discussions. The course will also address ethical issues and considerations from different professional perspectives regarding the provision of care with respect and dignity to patients or individuals in vulnerable situations.

Central topics in the course:

  • Patients and users in vulnerable situations
  • Various views on inclusion and diversity within patients and users both national and internationally
  • Interdisciplinarity both in perspectives, theories and practices

Learning outcomes

The student:

 

Knowledge 

  • Has knowledge about diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) and people in vulnerable situations.
  • Has knowledge on how to facilitate equitable healthcare services for all groups in society, including people with indigenous and minority backgrounds, considering various cultures, norms, values, languages, and social practices.
  • Has knowledge about various professional perspectives and inclusive practices.
  • Has knowledge of interdisciplinary collaboration when interacting with individuals in vulnerable situations.
  • Has knowledge about various inclusive practices from an international and interprofessional perspective.
  • Has knowledge about the political, social, and economic factors contributing to the development and maintenance of disparities in health care services.

Skills 

  • Applies knowledge of diversity, inclusive measures in assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of interprofessional healthcare.
  • Can collaborate interdisciplinary to ensure comprehensive care measures that promote. inclusion and reduce marginalization among patients and users in diverse clinical settings.

Teaching methods

The teaching methods are seminars, group work, online teaching and learning, and self-study.

The student workload in the course is estimated to 135 hours.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with the student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1.

Assessment methods and criteria

Project assignment in groups in the form of a podcast or video.

There can be up to five participants in the group.

Assessment: Pass/fail.

One grade is given for each group.
