Course contents

5 credits from the course is for all of the students undergoing teacher education (primary school and lower secondary school). During this part, different subjects relevant for the researching teacher will be adressed: scientific theory, ethics, sources and academic reading and writing.

The course will give a specialization in scientific method focusing on teaching the students to develop good academic thesis and research them by using suitable methods. The students are also going to learn how to work with different sets of data and have a good insight on the quality demands that is required for research. The purpose of the course is teaching the students to develop good academic thesis, and research the thesis empirically using different methods. The students are also going to learn how to work with different primay and secondary data, and have a good insight on the demands required for research of high quality.

During the course the students will aquire a good academic basis to contribute to research informed developement work. The course will give the students the skills that is required to be able to implement a professional and practical research project (the master thesis) under guidance.

Knowledge
The newly educated teacher has in -depth knowledge about:

  • scientific theories and methods relevant for the researching teacher

  • research ethics, the use of sources and academic reading and writing.

The newly educated teacher:

  • has insight and can use different research methods relevant for class room research/school research

  • can use electronic search platforms to find relevant research litteratur and critically assess it.

  • can consider chosen research methods with respect to thesis, validity and reliability

 

General competanse
The newly educated teacher:

  • can at an advanced level contribute to research informed developement work which promotes academic and pedagodic innovative thingting in school.

Examination requirements

  • Approved mandatory participation in classes

  • Approved course work requirements

  • Passed supervised professional training

  • Project description for the master thesis has to be handed in, presented and approved

Teaching methods

The classes will vary between different methods of teaching. There will be lectures, seminars, task solving, case work, oral presentations and guidance. Through exemplary teaching methods it will be demonstrated how to work as a researching teacher together with other developement oriented teachers.

Outside of the classes it is expected that the students work with assignments and litterature studies, both individually and in groups. A significal amount of the students learning and developement will be aquired through individual effort. Estimated workload is about 400 hours.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Folder assessment, written individually, graded A-F.
