Course contents

The aim of the course is that the students gain knowledge of sociological theories and discussion on the relationship between emotions and society. Topics which will be covered in the course are; emotions at work and in social interactions, emotions and economy and emotions and politics. The students will also gain insight into methodological possibilities and challenges related to studying emotions from a sociological perspective

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the students will:

  • be able to give a detailed account of central issues in sociology of emotions and recognise perspectives, tensions and discussions among scholars in this field

  • be able to formulate researchable questions which utilise perspectives on the relationship between emotion and society

  • know an array of theoretical perspectives which enable them to critically discuss the relationship between emotion and society

  • to be able to critically assess the usefulness of these perspectives

Approved mandatory assignment, further information will be given in Canvas at the start of the semester.

Teaching methods

Lectures and seminars. Information is posted on Canvas. Expected work volume is approximately 140 hours.

Evaluation

The course lecturer decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1.

Assessment methods and criteria

An essay, given as home exam at the end of the course, graded A-F. Further information will be given in Canvas.
