Prerequisites

Field education builds upon knowledge acquired from the previous courses in social work from the student's home country. Previous knowledge must be documented, with a minimum of 10 ECTS in Social Work.

Course contents

Field education (i.e. work placement/internship) is designed to provide students with opportunities to apply practice theory, policy and research knowledge and skills in the workplace. The field education will give the student insight in the Norwegian welfare state and require cooperation between social workers/clients in the field of social work.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course students will have gained

  • an increased understanding of the relationship between research, theory and practical social work

  • increased awareness of their own values and attitudes, as well as develop their communication and collaboration skills

  • insight into the Norwegian welfare scheme in a local context

Teaching methods

During field education students must comply with the work place¿s rules and regulations.

The field education course lasts for about 18 weeks during the autumn semester and includes visits to different institutions and offices, as well as placement in one place over some time.

The field education course may require some travelling, and in certain cases short-term stays away from the semester residence. Students are not guaranteed field education/work placement in close proximity to their semester residence.

Evaluation

Course evaluation is carried out as a midterm evaluation in accordance with standard procedure in the quality assurance system, chapter 2.1.1., unless other information is given in the beginning of the semester.

Assessment methods and criteria

Pass/fail assessment. In order to pass SO-305 examination requirements and mandatory attendance must be approved. For further details, please refer to the regulations for client-related field education for international students.
