Course contents

The role of the teacher and the subject as a school subject.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

Upon course completion, students will be able to:

  • demonstrate experience-based knowledge of the characteristics of the teaching profession and the teacher role

  • demonstrate experience-based knowledge of observation, with an emphasis on school subject 1

  • demonstrate experience-based knowledge of planning and instruction of individual academic topics associated with school subject 1

  • demonstrate experience-based knowledge of appropriate teaching materials and various working methods

Skills

Upon course completion, students should be able to:

  • carry out systematic observation

  • plan, carry out and assess instruction, either alone or in collaboration with others

  • utilise various teaching materials and working methods in their teaching

  • master basic classroom management, such as structuring learning activities, giving clear instructions, and establishing a good learning environment

General competence

Upon course completion, students will be able to:

  • communicate and collaborate with others

  • identify and reflect on ethical issues related to the profession and perform their teaching activities in accordance with such issues

Examination requirements

Students must pass the practice period during the autumn semester in order to proceed with the programme. The criterias are:

- Practice period: 100% attendance

- Seminar acticities in pedagogy and subject didactics: A minimum of 80% attendance

- Approved observation book

 

For the practice period during the spring semester:

- Practice period: 100% attendance

- Seminar acticities in pedagogy and subject didactics: A minimum of 80% attendance

Teaching methods

In-school tutoring courses, team work, individual preparation, observation, work on an observation book, participation in guidance sessions, planning, carrying out and evaluating/assessing instruction.

 

The practice period consists of 10 days at lower secondary level in the autumn and 10 days in the spring.

There will also be various seminar activities in pedagogy and subject didactics connected to the practice periods.

 

Assessment methods and criteria

Upon completion of the teaching practice, students will receive an individual written assessment with the grade of Passed/Failed. The student assessment must be based on the described learning outcomes.

 

Students will present the assessment report to the practice teacher at the beginning of the following practice period, in order to ensure cohesive practice periods with a clear progression .
