Course contents

The candidates will meet, master and assess how school, teaching and learning are understood general didactics. The subject provides a thorough introduction to school as a societal institution and its purpose and content. This includes historical perspectives on how schooling and general didactics developed. In the subject, we also work with how different didactic models can be used as tools in teaching. A key distinction in the course will be between theories of what teaching is and the ability to assess different approaches to teaching. Current challenges for general didactics as theory and practice are also important perspectives in the course. Such challenges can come from educational policy or societal changes and development.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the PhD candidate must:

  • be at the forefront of knowledge within the subject area of general didactics
  • have in-depth knowledge of the school as a social institution, its purpose, content, and connections between discourses on a macro and micro level
  • have knowledge of the history of general didactics, as well as how school has developed as a societal institution
  • be able to analyze didactic theory and practice based on different didactic models and teaching traditions
  • be able to identify how current topics are formulated within various research traditions that theorize what teaching and learning are
  • be able to critically assess the different research traditions' approach to teaching
  • be able to analyze current challenges for general didactics as theory, research field and practice, as well as current challenges for schools and teaching

Assessment methods and criteria

Paper. Scope of paper: 7-10 pages (2500-3000 words). The paper is graded Approved/Not approved.

2 ECTS can be approved for participation without paper. Participation is mandatory.
