Course contents

The course consists of two components:

  • Communication and Cooperation: Introduction to the theory of leadership and team development. Traits and motivation concerning leadership and followership. Leadership behaviour and leadership styles. Influencing tactics of a leader. How to motivate and coach team members. Development of creativity and innovation. Ethical behaviour in the leadership role and theory about communication and conflict resolution skills in teams. How effective teams can be established.

  • Research Methods: The research process from problem to publication. Describing the field of study. Formulation of problem space and research questions. Literature search strategies. Selection of applicable Research Methodologies. Development of qualitative and quantitative research designs. Presentation techniques. Report writing and publication guidelines

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course, the students should…

  • be able to identify different challenges concerning cooperation in heterogeneous teams (cross-cultural, cross-gender, multiple background and expertise, etc.)

  • know how to establish and maintain well-functioning teams and also be able to place their own personality and problem-solving skills and see potential consequences for team effectiveness

  • be able to structure teamwork and solve personality conflicts within the team

  • be capable of writing their own analysis of team development and team processes

  • be able to identify, describe, evaluate and approach research problems in the Computer Sciences domain

  • be able to identify relevant literature and apply theoretical models to the identified research problems

Examination requirements

A minimal participation of 80% in lectures and seminars (i.e. 5 out 6 teaching days in "Communication and Cooperation " and 3 out of 4 teaching days in "Research Methods") is a prerequisite for the examination.

Compulsory assignments must be approved. Information about compulsory assignments will be given in Canvas at the start of the course.

Teaching methods

This course includes lectures, exercises, group work, and compulsory assignments.

Generally, lectures and exercises are offered on-site on campus (UiA, Grimstad). In principle, this is NOT an online course, and requires full commitment. The work load for the average student is approximately 200 hours. A minimal participation of 80% in lectures and seminars (i.e. 5 out 6 teaching days in "Communication and Cooperation " and 3 out of 4 teaching days in "Research Methods") is a prerequisite for the examination.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1.

Admission Requirement if given as Single Standing Module

Admission requirements for the course are the same as for the master’s programme in ICT, or the master’s programme in Multimedia and Educational Technology.

Assessment methods and criteria

Communication and Cooperation: Two compulsory group assignments: the first (intermediate) assignment has to be passed (not graded), the second assignment is graded and counts 66 % of the final course grade. The groups are generally given joint grades.

Research Methods: One graded group assignment that counts 34 % of the final grade. The groups are generally given joint grades.

Reduction of Credits
