Course contents

This course focuses on the knowledge of work methods, instrumental work, creative craftsmanship, and performing and musical skills in the main instrument/area. Within the course, students delve into their main instrument/area within the chosen specialization, which occurs through practical music performance, including main instrument instruction, artistic guidance, interpretation, music production, and performance. The emphasis is placed on individuality, artistic uniqueness, and musical identity, aiming to provide students with extensive knowledge of the field of music.

In the specialization of Performing Music, students receive group guidance with a focus on their artistic practice.

In the specialization of Electronic Music, individual and group guidance is provided in performance, composition, programming, or studio work.

In the World Music specialization, the focus is on performance and artistic distinctive character, expression, and presentation. Additionally, attention is given to ethnology, historical, and stylistic features of traditional music from various countries.

In the Songwriting specialization, students explore and further develop their artistic distinctive character through various methods and approaches to the textual, musical, and performative aspects of songwriting.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the student should:

  • Possess in-depth knowledge related to their main instrument/area of focus.

  • Demonstrate a conscious understanding of their artistic identity and contextualize their own artistic work.

  • Be able to carry out interdisciplinary/artistic projects.

  • Be capable of utilizing and evaluating various communication channels.

  • Approved attendance for mandatory instruction.

  • Approved mandatory assignment.

Teaching methods

For students in the specializations of Performing Music, Electronic Music, World Music, and Songwriting, individual artistic guidance is provided in main instrument/area of focus, and group instruction is given where 1st and 2nd-year students are gathered. The teaching format is adapted to each specialization and may include lectures, workshops, masterclasses, and/or ensemble/group work. Interpretation is taught in group instruction, with all specializations in the 1st and 2nd years participating.

Parts of the teaching are mandatory, which will be detailed in Canvas at the beginning of the semester.

Expected Workload: 27 hours per credit point

Evaluation

The course coordinator, in consultation with student representatives, determines the evaluation method and whether mid-term or final evaluations should be conducted, in accordance with the quality system outlined in Chapter 4.1. Information regarding the evaluation method for the course will be published in Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

The examination consists of two parts:

  • Part 1: Various audio productions totaling 10 minutes.

  • Part 2: A reflective essay of up to 1500 words.
