Course contents

In this course, the student focus on learning popular music harmony, composition and arrangement techniques. The student analyzes compositions in different genres written by other composers, as well as how to arrange for different ensembles and instruments. Assignments will be provided during the semester. The student is encouraged to compose their own material and arrange these compositions for different ensembles. Relevant music technology tools are applied.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student should:

  • master basic composition and arrangement techniques

  • have obtained knowledge on how to score various instruments within the popular music tradition

  • be able to apply music technology as a composition and arrangement tool

  • be able to apply musical analysis as a tool in composing and arranging

Examination requirements

  • Approved attendance in compulsory classes

  • 1-3 approved assignments during the semester.

Teaching methods

The teaching is mainly given as group tuition, with individual supervision on assignments. The teaching applies digital tools such as Sibelius and Logic Pro.

 

Parts of the teaching are compulsory. These parts are presented in Canvas at the beginning of the semester.

 

Expected work scope is 27 hours per credits.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

Individual portfolio submission of a recorded composition with a written score of 5-7 minutes. An overall grade is given for the contents of the portfolio.
