Course contents

The course emphasizes developing skills in songwriting, performing, in ensemble and the student's instrument II. The connection between individual work and band interaction is central, and the student is challenged as musical director, in creative work, sound equipment knowledge and studying music. Band ensemble focus on the student's own compositions, and the student develop the songs from the early writing process to the completed ensemble version. Work is done on developing both vocal and instrumental skills, and the student is followed up on a supporting instrument for songwriting. Emphasis is placed on style understanding both individually and in ensemble. In addition, the student aims to develop adequate working and exercise practices.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student should:

  • be able to create, perform and communicate songs composed by the student

  • have acquired broad knowledge of creative and independent working methods within their main field of music

  • master compositional techniques such as lyrics and music creation

  • master methods for effective study and arrangement of music

  • have an understanding of different compositional parts and form concepts within songwriting in popular music genres

  • know key songwriters and artists from various musical eras in the popular music field

  • know the different roles of central instruments in different genres of music

  • know the key techniques of an instrument II

Teaching methods

Each student is given individual supervision in their main field of music.

The main instrument supervision can be organized flexibly to allow for various projects.

Ensemble takes place in various constellations and through project work. During the course, the student participates in interpretation (LIVE: performance with own and mutual assessment, as well as feedback from teachers), 2-4 compulsory projects, concerts and seminars. The student becomes familiar with copyright, methods of joint writing, and gains practical experience in various production processes. An overview of this is provided at the start of the semester. The student is also taught an optional instrument II. Teaching in this subject is given individually or, if appropriate, in groups.

 

Parts of the teaching are compulsory. These sections are presented in Canvas at the start of the semester.

 

Expected work scope is 27 hours per credits.

Evaluation

The study program manager determines-in consultation with the student representative-selected evaluation form and whether the courses should have mid- or final evaluation in line with the quality system chapter 4.1.

Assessment methods and criteria

The exam consists of 2 parts:

  • Part 1: A 15–20-minute concert. Students are assessed individually. Repertoire and participation are decided in consultation with the main instrument teacher.

  • Part 2: Individual portfolio submission consisting of: 10 minutes of recorded music and a written reflection paper of approx. 500 words

 

Both parts must be passed to pass the exam.
