Course contents

The course emphasizes recording and mixing music, the use of analog and digital synthesizers and midi programming / beat making. The students focus on developing their own work routines in relation to artistic assessments and critical listening. In music production, it is important for the student to have knowledge of relevant sound theories and international electronic music concepts used in a sound studio. An introduction is given to basic signal theory and acoustics.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student should:

• have knowledge of basic theory and concepts in electronic music

• be able to use central tools in music production

• have knowledge of the use of music technology in their own artistic practice

• be able to make a music production that contains recordings of acoustic instruments

• be able to make artistic and aesthetic assessments in the use of music technology

Examination requirements

• Approved attendance in compulsory classes.

• 2–4 approved submissions / projects

• Passed theory test

Teaching methods

The tuition is provided in groups and individual supervision in a sound studio. The tuition may be organized in seminars.

Parts of the teaching are compulsory. These parts are presented in Canvas at the beginning of the semester.

Expected scope of work is 27 hours per. credits.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

Individual portfolio submission consisting of:

• a practical sound production of approx. 5-10 minutes which may consist of several recordings

• a written reflection paper of minimum 500 words
