Course contents

During the course, the students will focus on a minor subject (Ensemble Singing, Orchestral Academy, Collaborative Piano, Choir Conducting, Creative Performer, Classical music improvisation, see the general study programme description for further information). The students will build their competence, performer’s profile and musician’s identity in relation to specific work traditions and situations.

Performance internships with the Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra, the Kilden Vocal Ensemble, the Kilden Opera or in artistic projects produced by the Kilden Dialogue or other partner institutions are most important.

It is emphasised that the student will gain knowledge about the prevailing performance traditions and the artistic practice within the professional music business and the artistic role represented by the minor subject. Other themes include the recognition and definition of artistic quality standards, repertoire knowledge and working methods of learning and practicing related to the minor subject. The course also includes repertoire work, work studies and analysis, relevant artistic problems and issues and knowledge about developing the student’s own performer’s profile within the minor subject.

Learning outcomes

Upon course completion, the student should:

• have advanced knowledge about repertoire, performance traditions and artistic practice in relation to her/his minor subject

• have solid learning capacity

• be able to comply with the professional standard accompanying the performance discipline and the work situations that the minor subject represents

• be able to work independently with analysis, full score- and work studies relevant to the minor subject.

• be able to apply knowledge and relevant methods to develop their own performer’s competence and profile

Teaching methods

Teaching is performed as one-to-one tuition, as well as in master classes, seminars and in groups. Internships are carried out through the Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra, the Kilden Vocal Ensemble, the Kilden Opera or through artistic projects produced by the Kilden Dialogue or other partner institutions.

Parts of the teaching activities are mandatory. These parts will be communicated through Canvas at the beginning of the semester.

The expected workload for students is 27 hours per credit.

Digital teaching and learning methods are implemented when relevant.

Evaluation

In cooperation with the student representative, the person responsible for the course determines the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation (in accordance with the quality system for education, Chapter 4.1).

Assessment methods and criteria

An individual performance test with no less than 30 minutes (performed repertoire set up in collaboration with the main instrument teacher).

Assessment: passed/not passed.
