Course contents

Course includes:

  • development of instrumental and vocal skills

  • development of consciousness regarding instrument specific problems

  • work with interpretation, style, repertoire knowledge and notational systems

  • work with relevant methods for practicing and rehearsing

  • work with general ensemble skills in different ensemble forms

  • work with secondary instrument

  • active participation in concerts with solo and ensemble repertoire

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students shall:

  • improve their knowledge of the solo repertoire and the central historical periods for their instrument

  • have a broad knowledge of relevant ensemble forms as well as repertoire

  • command a number of central instrument techniques

  • acquire basic solo repertoire on their main instrument

  • acquire basic skills on a secondary instrument

Examination requirements

  • Approved solo performance at minimum 1 concert hosted by UiA.

  • Approved ensemble performance at minimum 1 concert hosted by UiA.

  • Approved compulsory lesson attendance

Teaching methods

The course is conducted through individual lessons and group lessons. During the course, the student will participate in different projects and seminars. Each student will receive tuition in both disciplines (individually and in ensemble). The tuition resources will be allocated 70/30 in favor of the students main discipline. There will be room for flexible organisation regarding various projects. Attending the lessons is compulsory.

Parts of the tuition is mandatory. These will be presented in Canvas at the beginning of the semester.

Expected workload for an average student is 27 hours per credit

Evaluation

The course responsible, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, in accordance with the Quality System, section 4.1.

Individual performance. Duration minimum 15 minutes with repertoire decided by main instrument teacher.
Assessment: Pass/fail
