Course contents
The course is an introduction to the concept of e-sports, including the historical perspective, growth, and an overview of today's "branches". Students will gain an understanding of its global significance, how e-sports contribute to youth culture and societal change.
The course will work to demystify and debunk myths associated with gaming and e-sports. Furthermore, the course focuses on highlighting how e-sports contribute to the development of critical skills such as teamwork, leadership, strategic thinking, problem- solving, and digital skills.
The course will give the skills and knowledge necessary to guide students in a responsible introduction to e-sports. This includes how to balance training, competition, and school, as well as fostering an inclusive attitude towards other players and promoting diversity in all contexts.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
- Discuss the significance of e-sports for the classroom
- Account for the history of e-sport globally and locally
- Guide students towards a responsible introduction to e-sports
- Utilize aspects of e-sports in the classroom
- Refute myths and untruths about e-sports and gaming
Examination requirements
Completion of all mandatory assignments.
Teaching methods
The course is web-based and mostly self-driven. Teaching materials, assignments, and other activities will primarily be available through our Discord server.
The course is 2.5 credits, which constitutes an expected workload of 67.5 hours for an average student. These hours are distributed over 12 weeks.
Evaluation
A digital final evaluation will be conducted.
Assessment methods and criteria
Individual portfolio submission 100%, graded as pass/fail.
Information about the content of the portfolio will be given in Canvas by the start of the semester. There will not be arranged a postponed exam for the portfolio.
