Prerequisites

The student must have passed at least 45 ECTS in the Master´s programme before registering for the Master´s Thesis. Courses which are fundamental for the thesis must be passed. The topic of the Master's thesis has to be approved by the University of Agder.

Recommended prerequisites

The students are expected to have previous knowledge equivalent to ORG453-G Communication, Cooperation and Research Methods.

Course contents

The Master's thesis is an independent work with a topic relevant to the profile of the programme. The work should include elements of research and new knowledge or new methods. Basic assignments within planning, programming or development should be avoided. The thesis project includes a report describing state-of-the-art, research problem, approach, results, evaluation and outlook, and a press release, which presents the thesis and the main results. The project also includes a plenary presentation and a web presentation. Prototypes and/or other products which are developed may be included as part of the hand-ins.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the Master's thesis project, the student:

  • is able to apply his or her knowledge in new areas within multimedia and educational technology
  • can assess multimedia and E-learning systems, both from a scientific and an industrial perspective
  • has obtained skills required to analyze existing theories and methods, and to independently solve both applied and theoretical problems
  • can apply relevant research and development methods in an independent manner
  • is able to critically analyze various information sources, and apply these for structuring and formulating arguments
  • can conduct an independent research and development project under supervision, according to governing academic and ethical research standards
  • can convey comprehensive independent work by mastering relevant expression forms used within multimedia and E-learning research and development
  • is able to disseminate applied and theoretical problems and solutions, orally and in writing, both to peers and to the public
  • can contribute with innovation and new ideas both in academic and industrial multimedia and E-learning projects

Examination requirements

For every student/group there will be 10 compulsory guidance Meetings.

Teaching methods

Independent work. Supervisors will be available for regular consultations. The students choose whether they want to do the Master's thesis project individually or in groups of two students. The duration of the Master's thesis is normally one and a half semester, which gives an estimated workload of 1200 learning hours for the student.

The master's thesis is normally started in the fall semester and finishes in the spring semester. On application, the Faculty may approve that some students carry out their master's thesis over three semesters. This is given that the student meets all the prerequisites, and that there are available supervisors.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1.

Assessment methods and criteria

Written report, press release, and oral presentation. The report and other submitted work can be written and presented in English, Norwegian or another Scandinavian language. The students choose whether they want to write the Master's thesis individually or in groups of two students. The assessment given on the thesis may be individually adjusted after the oral presentation. Graded assessment.
