The course is connected to the following study programs

  • Mechatronics, Bachelor's Programme

Teaching language

Norwegian/Scandinavian/English

Recommended prerequisites

MAS100 Mechanics, MAS236 Machine elements and FEM 1, MAS132 3D-design, and MAS135 Materials science.

Course contents

  • Design against static and fatigue loading of machine elements and structural elements (Whöler-curves/SN-diagrams, Goodman diagrams and design guidelines), preloaded bolt connections in fatigue (bolt diagram), spur gears, springs, belt drives, power screws, shaft/hub-connections.

  • Design of welds against static failure and fatigue failure

  • Applied finite element (FEM), analysis of eigenfrequency, buckling, plate elements, introduction to nonlinear analysis

Please note that the courses MAS244 and MAS308 share content and lectures corresponding to 7,5 credits. Due to this a student will experience a reduction of 7,5 credits in MAS308 if he/she tries to take both courses.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course, the student is expected to:

  • be able to dimension structural elements and machine elements against static failure and fatigue failure

  • be able to dimension welds against static failure and fatigue failure

  • be able to select type of analysis and carry out a finite element analysis of a realistic design

Examination requirements

Satisfactory submission of possible compulsory exercises is required to deliver the project and attend the exam. The number of compulsory exercises will be announced in Canvas at the beginning of the course.

Teaching methods

Lectures and exercises. Guidance and supervision are available for the exercises. Estimated work load for the average student is 27 hours per credit.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Offered as Single Standing Module

Yes. Subject to availability or capacity.

Assessment methods and criteria

5 hours written exam. Graded assessment.

Reduction of Credits

This course’s contents overlap with the following courses. A reduction of credits will occur if one of these courses is taken in addition:

Course Reduction of Credits
