Course contents

Product development methodology, project work, project planning and team work, product development from need to concept and prototype, user orientation, product specification, concept generation, evaluation and choice of solution, design for X, 3D modeling and 3D printing, practical system design and control, LabView / Simulink toolbox LEGO Mindstorms, report writing.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course, the student is expected to

  • be able to explain product development methodology from need to prototype, and choose appropriate methods in a structured product development process

  • be able to perform a product development project in a team

  • be able to find, acquire and present relevant subject matter

  • be able to apply a knowledge and methods from design for X and make conscious choices in the product development process

  • be able to specify, develop, evaluate and select solutions in relation to requirements and wishes for the product in a lifecycle perspective

  • be able to apply mathematical, algorithmic and control principles as well as relevant methods for planning, developing and implementing a working prototype through physical construction and software development

  • be able to present process, solutions and results and provide substantiated feedback on the work of fellow students

  • be able to document knowledge, process, collaboration and results and reflect on this in a structured project report

Examination requirements

Two mandatory assignments. Milestone presentation with fellow student assessment.

Group project report including mechatronics prototype and presentation. Group graded assessment.
