Recommended prerequisites

Students should attend MA-178 Mathematics 1 and MA-179 Mathematics 2 in parallel with this course or have an equivalent level of mathematics knowledge as resulting from passing Mathematics 1 and Mathematics 2.

Course contents

  • Electrical circuits: Electrical quantities and units. Linear circuit elements, laws and mathematical methods for direct and alternating current in linear circuits. Pointer chart, impedance and admittance.

  • Digital Design: Number systems and codes. Boolean algebra. Logical elements, time and sequence elements and clock synchronized systems. Synthesis of systems with memories. Descriptions of sequential systems using finite state machines. Synchronous and asynchronous sequential systems.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course, the students:

  • have a basic understanding of linear electrical circuits with linear passive components

  • are able to carry out theoretical analysis and simulation of linear electrical circuits with linear passive components

  • have knowledge of and are able to use the most important number systems and codes for digital systems

  • are able to use elements and methods from digital design for analysis and synthesis of combinational and sequential digital circuits

  • are able to use electronic measuring instruments and have knowledge of basic measurement techniques

Examination requirements

Satisfactory submission of compulsory exercises. A list of mandatory exercises will be published in Canvas early in the semester.

Teaching methods

Lectures, exercises and mandatory laboratory exercises.

Estimated workload for an average student is 27 hours per ECTS.

Assessment methods and criteria

4-hour individual written examination. Graded assessment.
