The course is connected to the following study programs

  • Master's 5-Year Programme in Teacher Education, level 5-10

Teaching language

Norwegian

Prerequisites

Mathematics 1 for grade 5-10, or similar.

Course contents

Professional specialization in functional theory and geometry, with emphasis on argumentation and logical structure of the subject areas - but also exploration, with and without digital aids. Use of dynamic mathematics program, currently GeoGebra. Didactics with emphasis on knowledge of mathematics didactic research, and own R & D task related to practice.

The subject in practice
The teacher as both mathematician and didactician. Exercise skills as described above in the learning outcomes. R & D work related to own teaching in practice: Problem, data collection, reflection based on mathematics didactic literature, report writing and dissemination.

Learning outcomes

KNOWLEDGE

After completing the course, the student has knowledge

  • of euclidean geometry; Basic assumptions, key theorems and evidence and applications

  • about functional learning; Elementary functions, as well as basic derivation and integration, with emphasis on modeling and applications

  • About digital tools, including dynamic mathematics programs, in the work of geometry and functions

  • Mathematical didactic research related to some selected topics; Both with regard to methods, results and custom training

SKILLS

After completing the course, the student can

  • give students good examples, good explanations and good guidance related to mathematical concepts, calculations and exploration assignments in steps 5-10 with a thorough knowledge of geometry and functional theory

  • plan and analyze teaching situations with emphasis on mathematical argumentation, both with and without the use of digital aids, and adapted to different student needs

  • plan, use and reflect didactically on the use of different learning materials, including the use of dynamic mathematics programs, in mathematics education

  • formulate a problem, plan and complete field work, write and present a mathematics didactic R & D task based on practical experience and with support in critical use of mathematics didactic literature

GENERAL COMPETENCE

After completing the course, the student can

  • reflect on learning and teaching challenges and the use of teaching materials, by draws on in-depth knowledge in mathematics, didactic research and general pedagogy

Examination requirements

The student must have approved practice, other compulsory parts of the course and handed in the R & D assignment (as stated at the start of the course). For single-standing students, requirements for approved practice are replaced by requirements for approved didactic work.

Teaching methods

Lectures, work in groups, assignments, tests and other written assignments. There are 15 days practice for primary school students, including work with R & D assignments. Single-student students shall do a didactic work of equivalent scope as practice. The working methods include work with digital tools. Requirements for minimum 70% compulsory participation, and requirements for submissions and tests (given at the start of the studies). Total workload: 800 hours.

Evaluation

Course evaluation is carried out as a midterm evaluation in accordance with standard procedure in the quality assurance system, chapter 2.1.1., unless other information is given in the beginning of the semester.

Assessment methods and criteria

Part-examination 1: 6-hour written exam in geometry. Graded assessment. Counts 1/3 of the total score.

Part-examination 2: 6-hour written exam in functional theory. Graded assessment. Counts 1/3 of the total score.

Part-examination 3: Oral exam; Partly linked to the R & D task and partly linked to the didactic topics that have been addressed. Graded assessment. Counts 1/3 of the total score.
