The course is connected to the following study programs

  • Bachelor's Programme in Biology

Teaching language

Norwegian or english.

Prerequisites

80 ECTS credit points must be passed in chemistry coursees where minimum 20 credits must be at level 200.

Course contents

This course will provide students with insight into basic scientific methods, including working and writing techniques, which enable them to independently produce professional reports. In practical work the students will acquire skills through their own sampling and treatment of research data, which is to be presented in a final report. In particular, the scientific techniques relevant to the report will be emphasised.

Learning outcomes

After the course, the student should be able to

  • present how a scientific research project is planned and executed

  • have insight into the relevant methodology for carrying out a selected scientific project

present and discuss the results from the research project in oral and written form

Teaching methods

Introductory lectures will focus on the shaping of approaches to problems and choice of relevant experimental design. The structure and form of a research paper will be discussed, together with analysis and presentation of data, the use of references, and the making of a reference list. Upon request, the lectures will be given in English. For the practical part of the project, each student or group of students will be assigned a personal supervisor. The students will select a topic of interest for his research work and carry out relevant laboratory work under the supervision and guidance of the supervisor. The students are expected to spend a certain number of laboratory hours a week to carry out experimental work. The progress in the laboratory work should be reported to the supervisor at times mutually agreed by the students and the supervisor. The students will be expected to deliver a written report at a specified date. This date will be given at the start of the semester. The report may be presented in English.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

The Bachelor's project written group report is assessed by the supervisor and an external examiner. Graded assessment.

Students will be given an individual oral examination by the supervisor and an external examiner in relevant project literature. Graded assessment.

Before being allowed to take the oral examination, the written Bachelor's project must be approved.

Both written and oral exam must be passed.

The supervisor and students define the literature upon completion of the experimental work. There should be at least 50 pages from either specialised periodicals or their literary equivalent.
