Recommended prerequisites

It is recommended that the students have completed 60 ECTS in arts and crafts or similar. It is also recommended that the students work independently on artistic projects. Furthermore students are recommend to have basic digital skills.

Course contents

During the course, the students will work with artistic projects related to the Greek island Lesvos in general, and contemporary issues here in particular. Before the stay on Lesvos, the students will develop projects and establish contacts relevant to their plans. An important part of the course is to know about different artistic approaches to site and site-specific art. The students will be made aware of ethical concerns that might be raised with site-related art, and will be asked to discuss ethical issues in their own projects. Digital media are used actively in the course

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students will:

  • be familiar with various types of site-related art

  • have made artistic projects related to contemporary issues on Lesvos

  • be aware of the issues and forms of expression in contemporary art connected to site-specific art

  • have developed aesthetic and ethical awareness in site-related artistic projects

  • be able to use digital media for documentation, communication and in their own artistic projects

  • be able to make academic reflections and carry out assessments of their own work as well as the site-related work of others, and be able to communicate this to others

Examination requirements

In order to take the examination, the student must:

  • hand in project outline before the week-long stay in Lesvos

  • have all mandatory assignments and attendance approved

Teaching methods

The course will progress through 3 phases:

1. Introduction and preparation, where the students develop their own projects and get feedback from their supervisor. The students will also be introduced to the course topics through an introductory seminar, web-based lectures and readings.

2. An intensive week on Lesvos during which the students engage with their projects individually or in pairs/groups. Sharing of experiences and reflections with supervisors and fellow students.

3. Follow-up, development of site-related project, reflections, and a digital presentation of project or process (exam).

 

All lectures, the project outline, and seminars related to the course are mandatory.

Expected scope of work for the average student is 27 hours per credit.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

  1. An individual digital presentation of a site-related artistic project, or the process, on a web-based platform.

  2. A short text that should be publishable on the Internet along with the artistic project. More information will be given at the start of the semester.
