Course contents

The course emphasizes material and object-culture and will raise questions connected to materiality and objects’ function and value from a sustainable perspective. The creative process will include elements such as storytelling, defamiliarization, deconstruction and rupture.

 

Relevant theory from fields such as form culture, crafts, design and conceptual art will be taught and is crucial for the critical evaluation of the student's own works and other people's work practice.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the students shall

  • be acquainted with traditional and newer crafts, conceptual and material-based expressions in the field between art and design.

  • be able to explore traditional crafts-based knowledge, as well as develop skills through material experimentation and challenge the norms of the crafts-tradition.

  • be able to critically assess and use material based on knowledge of their functional, symbolic, aesthetic and constructive qualities in idea and material based expressions.

  • be able to master a professional conceptual framework that makes the student able to discuss issues regarding material technique and aesthetics, and be able to reflect on themes such as sustainability, ethics and ecology in relation to material

Examination requirements

  • Approved presence for mandatory teaching and counselling

  • Three approved work requirement, of which oral mediation is included as one of the three

Teaching methods

The course is organized in projects. By creating exhibits, the students will be able to explore various curatorial approaches.

 

The teaching will be based on lectures, seminars and workshops. Exhibit-production will be both in groups and individually. The work requirements demand that the students will, in large parts, work individually, and individual counselling will be available.

 

There will be excursions and voluntary field trips as well as visiting guest lecturers to give the students' knowledge and experience of the diversity in forms of expression.

 

Mandatory presence in all workshops and counselling. More information will be available on Canvas at the start of the semester.

 

The expected workload is 27 hours per credit.

Evaluation

the study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, in accordance with the Quality System, section 4.1.

Assessment methods and criteria

Individual exhibition and oral mediation of a practical-aesthetic work. Exhibition is weighted 40% and oral mediation is weighted 60% of the overall grade.
