Course contents

Most professionals spend many years of their lives in organisations. This course offers a basic introduction to theories in the fields of organisation and leadership. The student obtains an overview of the subject area and insight into the conditions for executing leadership at various levels. The analysis of organisational types and organisational processes are central to the course.

The student is equipped with a toolbox of concepts and models that are directly relevant to professional life.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student will be able to:

  • Analyze formal aspects of organizations, including organizational structure, as well as informal aspects, including norms.

  • Understand and discuss possible positive and negative consequences of their own and others' leadership for themselves, those they lead, and the surrounding environment.

  • Assess the consequences of leadership in relation to a sustainability perspective.

  • Discuss the relationship between the situation and different types of leadership, and which type of leadership is most appropriate in a given situation.

  • Explain key theories of leadership.

Teaching methods

The course is taught through lectures. There are also plans for some group work and student-centered teaching methods. The course has an estimated worload of 200 hours.

Evaluation

The Head of study programme, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

Individual written exam, 4 hours. Graded assessment.
