Prerequisites

A prerequisite for admission to the course entitled Research Project is to have passed 130 ECTS at the beginning of the term during which the Research Project will be carried out. The topic of the Research Project has to be approved by the University of Agder.

Course contents

Problem area and subjects are chosen by the students under supervision. The renewable energy group at the University of Agder will offer a portfolio of projects. These projects are defined in collaboration with the private and public sectors. The students can also choose to define their own projects. The project should be selected within the main specialization areas of the study programme. Project subjects from other areas can be chosen only where supervision capacity is available.

As far as possible the project should be designed to be implemented and tested in the industry, for the students to gain insight in the practical industrial application of the theoretical knowledge and the industry needs within the field of study.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • gained experience with the implementation of a major project within the energy field, including defining and planning the project

  • gained experience in writing a major project report, including the fair and correct use of relevant sources

  • demonstrated the ability to apply and synthesize knowledge and skills acquired in earlier studies

  • solved a specific engineering problem within in the energy sector in a satisfactory way, or to have identified the problem areas that need further work in order to find a solution

Examination requirements

Approved participation in compulsory guidance meetings, at a minimum of 5 meetings.

Teaching methods

Independent work, with at least 5 compulsory tutorials / supervisions.

At project start, the students shall write a project plan with milestones and dates. The plan must be submitted to the supervisor(s) within a specified deadline. The Bachelor Thesis is normally a spring term course, but might be offered in the autumn term if there is vacant capacity among the supervisors.

Estimated work load for the average student is 27 hours per credit.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1.”

Assessment methods and criteria

Project work carried out in group, with oral presentation and defence of the project. Graded assessment for the joint work. Presentation and defence of the project may give basis for individual assessment. For the matter of new or postponed examiation, both project work and oral presentation have to be carried out again. It is not allowed to submit an improved version of a previous exam.
