Course contents

This course provides insight into ways in which literature represents and interrogates reality and identity in relation to cultural trends and transitions, continuity, change and innovation.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students will have acquired

  • in-depth knowledge of important literature in relation to literary conventions, history and culture
  • insight into different critical approaches to literary analysis
  • knowledge of standards for academic writing and reliable use of sources

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to

  • competently search texts for important topics of investigation
  • competently evaluate and test different approaches to literary analysis
  • competently evaluate critical secondary material
  • write independent texts based on critical use of sources in line with relevant academic practices
  • use appropriate vocabulary and concepts with subtlety and stylistic variation

Examination requirements

An obligatory essay (2000-3000 words) and an oral presentation must be approved.

Teaching methods

Seminars. Regular, active participation expected. Estimated workload: Approximately 270 hours.

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1.

Assessment methods and criteria

The exam consists of two parts: A revised version of the essay (see "Examination requirements") and a two-week individual home exam. The essay will make up 30% for the final grade, and the home exam will make up 70 %. Both parts must receive passing grades to pass the course. Graded assessment.
