Prerequisites

45 ECTS credits in English. EN-122, EN-146 and EN-168 or the equivalent must be successfully completed.

Course contents

This course focuses on one or more topics in English linguistics and builds on knowledge and skills acquired at the 100-level of English linguistics. The topics may be related to fields of study within theoretical and/or applied linguistics and may be addressed from a synchronic and/or diachronicperspective.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student has

  • in-depth knowledge of a specific topic or topics within the field of English linguistics.
  • a thorough understanding of central methods and relevant theories related to the topic(s) addressed in the course.
  • familiarity with central research in the topic(s) addressed in the course.

On completion of the course, the student can

  • account for the central aspects of the topic(s) dealt with.
  • present and discuss relevant topics in some detail with linguistic terminology.
  • explain and demonstrate understanding of relevant linguistic concepts.

Examination requirements

To be eligible to take the exam, all obligatory course requirements must be approved. An overview of the obligatory tasks will be given on Canvas at the start of the term. 70% compulsory attendance of classes.

Teaching methods

The teaching consists of lectures and seminars but may also include other methods, such as oral and written presentations, group work and individual work. Active and regular participation is expected. The workload is estimated to 270 hours.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1.
