BYG602 Experimental techniques and materials in civil engineering
- ECTS Credits:
- 5
- Responsible department:
- Faculty of Engineering and Science
- Course Leader:
- Dmitry Vysochinskiy
- Lecture Semester:
- Spring, Autumn
- Duration:
- 1 term
The course is connected to the following study programs
- PhD Programme in Engineering and Science
Course contents
The course focuses on experimental characterization of material properties. The type of material chosen and properties tested depends on the candidate’s PhD research topic and is rather wide, although limited by the type of available laboratory equipment. Examples of earlier covered materials and techniques include abrasion resistance testing for road aggregates, fracture toughness testing and use of optical strain measurements for metals, fresh concrete properties testing, testing of mechanical properties of 3D printed metals. The experimental work might also include non-destructive testing of structures, harden concrete properties, use of optical measurements for concrete crack detection, application of concrete 3D-printing techniques, testing and experimental characterization of drinking water and wastewater properties, characterization of pavement materials etc. depending on the PhD-candidate research topic.
Examination requirements
Compulsory intermediate presentations and final course report.
Teaching methods
Seminars, literature study, experimental work in the laboratory or in the field and group presentations of the results.
Evaluation
The supervisor determines, in consultation with the student union representative, the form of evaluation and whether the courses are to have a mid-term or final evaluation in line with the quality system chapter 4.1. Information about the form of evaluation for the subject is published in Canvas.
Offered as Single Standing Module
No
Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination. Pass/fail
Other information
Must be admitted to PhD programme in Engineering and Science
