  • Analytical models for systems with multiple degrees of freedom

  • Design principles of steel structures

  • Characteristics of fatigue

  • Fatigue lifetime estimation using SN diagram

  • Stochastic modelling

  • Dynamic loads

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course, the student is expected to:

  • Have knowledge of dynamic equilibrium, equations of motion of structural systems

  • Have knowledge of the damping mechanisms of structures

  • Have knowledge of design principles and failure mechanisms of load-bearing steel structures

  • Have knowledge of methods for estimating fatigue life in the fatigue limit stage (FLS) design

  • Be able to recognise different forms of dynamic loads and system responses in the time- and frequency-domain

  • Be able to design steel elements with reference to fatigue strength

  • Be able to apply design checks with reference to design standards
