Recommended prerequisites

German equivalent to level 2 from Upper secondary school.

Course contents

  • Literary texts of different genres from the German-speaking countries

  • History of literature and general historical facts/considerations, background and specialization

  • Modern German literature

  • Oral and written exercises and student presentations

  • In-depth exercises in academic writing with focus on the science of literary analysis

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students shall

  • be able to analyse various types of literary genres of varying complexity and length.

  • be able to use textual-analytical tools in literary analysis, and to compare texts.

  • be able to safely use literary analytical, historical and socially relevant subject expressions and terms and otherwise express oneself adequately both in writing and orally

  • be able to explain, situate and relate various texts to literary historical, historical, and cultural contexts.

  • be able to apply and expand on detailed knowledge of literary history, general history, and cultural knowledge in order to present these fields in a wider context.

Examination requirements

For students in the master's programme for secondary education teachers: The supervised professional work practice must be completed and approved.

All other students: An obligatory oral presentation must be assessed as a Pass. Further information will be provided in Canvas.

The oral presentation is not mandatory for students in the teacher education, but they may participate and receive feedback, like the other students attending the course.

Teaching methods

Lectures, seminars, and oral exercises. Digital and/or interactive learning tools and exercises, which are made available in Canvas. Regular attendance and active participation in class and in Canvas are recommended.

For students attending the master's programme for secondary education teachers, supervised professional training is included (two weeks).

The workload is estimated at 400 hours.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1.

Assessment methods and criteria

1) An oral examination (approx. 30 minutes) (counts 50% towards the final grade). Graded assessment.

2) Portfolio containing 3 written literary analyses. Further information will be provided in Canvas. (counts 50% towards the final grade). Graded assessment.
