Recommended prerequisites

It is recommended that students have German level 2 from upper secondary school (formerly B or C language) or equivalent.

Course contents

  • Literary texts of various genres from the German-speaking countries

  • Literary-historical, cultural and general historical overview and background

  • Modern German fiction with a focus on literary analysis

  • Oral and written exercises and student presentations

  • Introduction to general features of academic writing

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course, students should

  • be able to read and interpret different types of literary texts

  • be able to use textual analytical tools in the interpretation of different types of literary texts

  • be able to use basic literary analytical, historical and socially relevant terminology and terms and express themselves adequately both orally and in writing

  • be able to anchor different literary texts in literary-historical, historical and cultural contexts

  • be able to explain in detail and clearly literary historical, historical and cultural contexts

Examination requirements

Students in the teacher education: Approved practical work practice. Oral presentation (see below) is not compulsory for students in the teacher education programme, but those students who wish to can participate and receive feedback from the teacher in the same way as the other students on the course.

All other students: A compulsory written assignment of approx. 700 words must be assessed as passed. An oral presentation must be graded as passed. The coursework requirements are described in more detail in the semester plan on a digital platform.

Teaching methods

Lectures, seminars and oral exercises. It also includes digital and/or interactive learning and exercise material, which is made available via the learning platform. It is recommended that regular and active participation in the teaching and that the digital learning platform is visited regularly.

The expected total workload for this course is 405 hours.

For students in the teacher education programme, grades 8-13, 2 weeks of practical training are included.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1.

An individual oral examination (ca. 30 minutes). Graded assessment.
