Students are expected to be able to express themselves in advanced academic English on a variety of subjects, both orally and in writing.
Course contents
The main elements of the course are Norwegian history, religion, literature, and language.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students are expected to:

have an overview of various aspects of Norwegian society and culture from both historical and contemporary perspectives

understand different explanations regarding societal and cultural developments in Norway

distinguish and understand connections between social, political, economic, cultural, technological and environmental factors when discussing society

analyse and critically discuss a variety of literary texts

describe differences and similarities between society, culture and education in Norway and their home countries
Teaching methods
Lectures and seminars. The interaction between student and teacher is of vital importance in the lectures and seminars, and students are required to bring in their own perspectives and previous experiences in dealing with the different topics. Thus, the students´ attendance in the seminars is not compulsory, but of vital importance for the learning outcome. The workload is estimated at ca. 270 hours.
Evaluation
The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1.
Assessment methods and criteria
5-hour written examination. Graded assessment.
