Course contents

The course lays the foundation for contemporary theatre studies. The students will see, experience, review and analyse current theatre performances. The students will be introduced to a broad spectrum of theatre styles, which all related themselves to and explore our contemporary age. This gives insight into the local, national and international theatrical landscape. Taking as a starting point the audience experience the students will undertake practical work with modes of expressions and performance analysis

Different modes of expression will be tested and discussed. Students will work with performance reviews as a genre. Theatre criticism will be explored as part of contemporary theatre’s publicity and professional practice.

Introduction to theatre history, academic theory and terminology will be linked to the performances that the students experience and work with.

Learning outcomes

After course completion the student must:

• have basic understanding of the different types of contemporary theatre

• have basic understanding of theatre as an art form.

• be able to use correct terminology to describe and convey theatre performances.

• have basic knowledge of theatre criticism in the current media.

• understand the fundamentals of various forms of stage and audience relationships.

• have basic knowledge of contemporary scholarly debate and the context of contemporary theatre.

• Approved attendance for mandatory lessons.

• Approved mandatory assignments.

Teaching methods

Work will be predominantly group-based and will encompass both theory and practice; and the interplay of theory and practice. The curiosity of the students, openness to own theatrical experience and the experiences of others will be nurtured. The schedule will, where possible, ensure that the different sections of the course such as practical work, lectures, seminars and conferences are completed in units. There will be opportunities for optional excursions and study trips.

Some classes in select subject matters are mandatory. These will be highlighted on Canvas at the start of the semester.

Expected workload 27 hours per credit.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1.

6 hours written examination.

Evaluation method: Graded by letters.
