Course contents

The course provides an introduction to geography and history. The topic emphasizes geographical and demographic main features, both locally and globally, and human history until today. Emphasis is placed on introducing theories and methods in geography and history, and on developing skills in the use of different types of sources and source-critical understanding. The course focuses on relationships between nature and society in the past and present, and how nature and society affect each other. The subject addresses human history and focuses on democracy processes in Norway and Europe.

The course in practice
The course deals with varied working methods and digital tools that are relevant to the subject in school. During the practice period, students will work in particular with the use of sources and source criticism as well as the use of digital tools in teaching. In addition to this, special education is emphasized in the social field during the practical period.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

After completing the course, the student will:

  • have knowledge of the connection between place, landscape, culture and history

  • have knowledge of interaction and conflict between natural backgrounds, living conditions and sustainable development

  • have knowledge of the emergence of democracies and democratization processes in Norway and Europe

  • have knowledge of events and relationships in contemporary times in light of power relationships and human actions in the near and distant past

  • have knowledge of scientific theories and methods in the subject

  • know the teaching practices and challenges in the subject in 5-10 steps

  • have knowledge of the historical main features of societal development in Norway and Sápmi

  • have knowledge of central theories and methods in the subject areas

  • have knowledge of key sources in the disciplines and critical assessment of these.

Skills

After completing the course, the student will:

  • be able to apply professional knowledge and results from research and development work

  • be able to work independently with academic questions and analyze professional issues based on the facts and theories of the subject area

  • critically analyze societal issues and stimulate this in the education

  • be able to use and evaluate digital tools and sources in the training

  • be able to plan, adapt, implement and evaluate teaching in the subject.

General competence

After completing the course, the student will:

  • be able to critically reflect on professional issues

  • be able to critically reflect on social issues and stimulate critical thinking

  • have insight into the understanding of the subject by children and adolescents

  • have professional ethics.

Examination requirements

Work assignments and practice must be passed in order to pass the exam. Detailed description of work assignments will be provided through Canvas. The course is entitled to 70% attendance in order to take the exam.

Primary school students must have: Passed practice. Other students must have: Passed academic didactic work of equivalent scope as practice.

Teaching methods

The teaching will be characterized by a variety of lectures and seminars with a touch of conversation, reflection, group work, exercises, presentations, excursions, etc. 3 weeks of practical practice with supervision is included in the course. There are 15 days practice for elementary school students. Other students must perform a subject didactic work of equivalent scope that must be passed. The course has an expected workload of about 400 hours.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Yes. Subject to availability or capacity. The student has to have completed teacher education for primary and secondary school.

Assessment methods and criteria

48-hour individual home exam and 4-hour school exam. Each exam counts 50%.
