Recommended prerequisites

The teaching of the course requires previous knowledge of Spanish equivalent to level 2 from upper secondary school, alternative B1 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Instruction is mainly in Spanish. It is discouraged to follow the course without prior knowledge, as this will be very laborious.

Course contents

The course gives an introduction to central aspects of Spanish culture, literature and history through work with different types of texts and cultural expressions. Literature and Culture I focuses on texts from the 20th and 21st century related to Spain and Western Sahara.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge: After completing the course, students should have knowledge of

  • Selected Spanish-language literary texts and cultural expressions

  • Selected historical, political and cultural themes related to Spain and the Spanish-speaking world

  • Recent Spanish history

  • Spanish colonial history with emphasis on Western Sahara

Skills: On successful completion of the course, students should be able to

  • Read texts in different genres in Spanish

  • Place texts in a political and historical context

  • Analyse literary texts independently

  • Reflect independently on the various academic topics included in the course

  • Master different communication situations both orally and in writing

  • Communicate with understandable pronunciation and intonation in Spanish

  • Use a varied vocabulary adapted to different communication situations

  • Master basic language structures in Spanish

General competence: On successful completion of the course, students should be able to

  • Present and talk about the topics included in the course in an understandable and structured manner, both orally and in writing

  • Orient themselves in academic literature related to the course

  • Critically evaluate sources

  • Use citations in separate texts.

Examination requirements

Portfolio with mandatory tasks. Further details will be given when the semester starts.
The mandatory attendance requirements must be met (70%).

Students in the teacher education: Professional supervised training must be completed and approved.
All other students: A project work must be completed and approved.

Teaching methods

Lectures, seminars, workshops and group work. Student-active forms of work and the use of digital resources for increased learning. For students in teacher education for grades 8-13, professional supervised work experience is included. The students' active participation in practical exercises is necessary to develop good language skills, therefore participation in parts of the course is mandatory. The scope of work is estimated at 270 hours.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1.
