Recommended prerequisites

The teaching of the course requires previous knowledge of Spanish equivalent to level 2 from upper secondary school, alternative B1 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Instruction is mainly in Spanish. It is discouraged to follow the course without prior knowledge, as this will be very laborious.

Course contents

Based on the students' basic prior knowledge, the course provides a theoretical and practical introduction to central topics in Spanish grammar and phonetics. Furthermore, the focus is on applying the language structures in different contexts in order to be able to master different communication situations both in writing and orally.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge: After completing the course, students should have knowledge of

  • basic language structures in the Spanish language

  • basic analysis of key language structures

  • the individual language sounds in Spanish and their articulation

  • different language learning strategies

 

Skills: After completing the course, students should be able to

  • understand the main content of written and oral texts in Spanish

  • master basic language structures in Spanish

  • master different communication situations both in writing and orally

  • communicate with understandable pronunciation and intonation in Spanish

  • use a varied vocabulary adapted to different communication situations

  • write short academic texts in different genres in Spanish

  • analysing basic language structures

 

General competence: After completing the course, the students should be able to

  • orient themselves in academic literature related to the subject

  • critically evaluate sources

  • reflect on intercultural competence

  • describe and evaluate their own work in learning languages in general and Spanish in particular

Examination requirements

Portfolio with mandatory tasks. Further details will be given when the semester starts.
The mandatory attendance requirements must be met (70%).

Students in the teacher education: Professional supervised teaching practice must be completed and approved.
All other students: A project work must be completed and approved.

Teaching methods

Lectures, seminars, workshops and group work. Student-active work methods and use of digital resources for increased learning. For students in teacher education for grades 8-13, professional supervised work experience is included. The students' active participation in practical exercises is necessary to develop good language skills, therefore participation in parts of the course is compulsory. The scope of work is estimated at 270 hours.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1.

4-hour written examination under surveillence. Graded assessment.
