Teaching language

All teaching will be in English. Students may write their exam in English or Norwegian.

Recommended prerequisites

One (or two) year(s) of a bachelor’s degree in teacher education. Good English language skills.Participation in information event prior to the course.

Course contents

The course is ideal for students who are interested in an international perspective on democracy andeducation. It provides knowledge about democratic issues and global trends related to history,culture, ethics, media and education. Furthermore, the course will give the students comparativeanalytical skills and broaden their understanding of democracy and other cultures.

The course revolves around how democracy is related to educational issues in societies with anemphasis on the following areas: (1) Democracy and education - a historical introduction, (2)Democracy in educational systems, (3) Role of societal values for education and citizenship (4)Human rights and diversity.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to

Knowledge

• compare and contrast knowledge of central themes, theories, and different valueapproaches within the fields of democracy and education

• formulate a general understanding of the history, traditions, values, developments andcharacteristics of democracy in Norwegian education with special emphasis on teachereducation and the curriculum

 

Skills

• apply the overall principles of democracy to the analysis of educational practices in Norwayand other countries

• identify and critically reflect on information relating to history, ethics, media, and educationin the light of democratic valuesGeneral.

 

General competance

• demonstrate awareness of diverse cultural values and beliefs, and approach thesedifferences in accordance with the ethical standards of educational professionals

• work independently and together with others to achieve enhanced understanding of theprocess of participation and citizenship for educational opportunities

Examination requirements

A short, 1-hour, multiple-choice examination under supervision. Assessment: pass/fail.

Evaluation

The course is to have an end course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education,chapter 4.1.

Assessment methods and criteria

An individual home examination to be submitted one week after the course has finished: An essay (1000 words +/- 10%) based on a logbook written throughout the course. Assessment: pass/fail
