Course contents

The course provides an introduction to key concepts, approaches and theoretical approaches in innovation theory. The course covers:

  • the concept of innovation and different models of how innovation activity is carried out

  • organization of innovation in firms

  • theories of innovation systems

  • how innovation affects economic development

  • innovation and grand social challenges

  • characteristics of the ‘Norwegian innovation mode’

Learning outcomes

  • have knowledge of key innovation theories

  • theories of transformation of the economy

  • know how innovation happens in different types of businesses

  • have skills in analysing the scope and direction of innovation activity in different types of businesses and industries

  • have expertise on matters internal to enterprises and social factors that promote or inhibit innovation activities

Teaching methods

Lectures, seminars, case studies with two assignments, discussions/seminars. There will be field trips to companies or organisations.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

One group based (40%) and one individual paper (60%).
