Course contents

This course will provide insight into key topics of organisational theory. Special emphasis will be given to 1) the relationship between organisations and environment, 2) the structuring of organisations, 3) behaviour and culture within organisations, 4) change and management.
Subjects that will be included are, for example: what is organisational theory, why do we have organisations (markets and transaction costs, resources and complementary assets, value chains, division of labour and specialisation), goals and efficiency in organisations, organisational structure, organisational culture and ethics, power and conflict, organisations and their environments, motivation, communication, decision making, organisational learning, flexibility and change, management of organisations, and how to analyse an organisation.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course the student should be able to demonstrate that they:

  • understand how organisations are structured and how they can change

  • can identify the fields of interactions between organisations and environment

  • can recognize formal- (objectives, strategy, structure) and informal- (culture, power relations) characteristics of a an organisation

  • can analyse organisational behaviour and processes (motivation, communication, learning, change, etc.)

Approved compulsory group assignment. Further information will be given in Canvas at the start of the semester.

Teaching methods

Lectures, group work and group assignment. The estimated work load of this course is 200 hours.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

3-hour written examination with letter grades.
