Course contents

Through work with understanding of style, exploration of possibilities within own instruments, expressions and ensemble activities with other musicians, the student's musical signature is developed.

In addition, work in the studio with the production of own material is central. In connection with the studio work, the student will receive teaching especially with a view to identifying and further developing artistic and musical profile. Performer knowledge in the form of mastering performance, collaboration and instrument knowledge is integrated into the teaching.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student should:

  • Be able to reflect, recognize and understand various musical genres in relation to their main area

  • have a broad knowledge of different styles within the popular music field

  • have acquired a personal expression as a songwriter and performer

  • be able to adapt to the various working situations of professional music life

  • have experience in producing own material

  • be able to handle artistic challenges in a creative, exploratory and analytical way

Examination requirements

  • Approved attendance in compulsory classes

  • 1-3 approved ensemble concerts / projects

  • 1-3 approved compulsory assignments

  • Approved participation for at least 1 interpretation

Teaching methods

The course includes learning songwriting, ensemble, studio work and projects. Each student is given individual tuition within their main area. The teaching may be organized in groups if appropriate. Ensemble is conducted in regular groups and in various projects. The student focus on their own musical material and cover songs. The ensemble teaching is conducted so that the student can choose different areas such as co-writing, studioband, live-lab, ensemble or songwriting circle. Eligibility for ensemble may vary based on the number of students.

During the course, the student participates in interpretation, as well as various compulsory projects and /or seminars.

 

A collaborative concert with the other students in the course is a creative and performing main project. Project planning, implementation and guidance in the various processes leading up to the concert is a central part of the course. The project's scope, target group and process are presented at the start of the semester.

 

Parts of the teaching are compulsory. These parts are presented in Canvas at the beginning of the semester.

 

Expected work scope is 27 hours per credits.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1.

Assessment methods and criteria

The exam consists of 2 parts, and repertoire and participation are set in consultation with the main instrument teacher.

 

Part 1: Concert of approx. 30 minutes. Students are assessed individually.

Part 2: Individual portfolio submission consisting of 15 minutes of recorded own music.

 

Both parts must be passed to pass the exam.

Grade: Pass/Fail.
