Course contents

Course includes:

  • review of the history of western classical music with attention given to different characteristics, approaches and analysis

  • theme-based work around composer, period, genre or popular music
    special course in folk music

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students shall:

  • have knowledge of different historical eras of music, and be able to define central terms and expressions

  • have a good command of basic work analysis, and be able to exercise independent thinking

  • have an understanding of music as a form of art and as a part of western cultural heritage

  • have knowledge of musical aesthetics

Teaching methods

The course is conducted through lectures and group work.
Expected workload for an average student is 27 hours per credit.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

One individual practice-based assignment with sound production related to the curriculum. Duration: 21 days. More information will be provided upon semester start.
Assessment: Graded A-F
