Course contents

The course emphasizes songwriting and composition for electronic music centered around the computer as a compositional tool. Through the course, the students' ability to convey compositional ideas within various genre expressions is further developed. The student applies analytical methods to acquire technological and music theoretical knowledge. In this way, the student learns to make qualified and reflected artistic choices in their own and others' compositions.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student should:

  • be able to reflect upon artistic choices in their own compositions

  • be able to discuss artistic challenges and choices in an analytical way

  • be able to apply different analysis methods to learn from own and others' compositions

  • master relevant composing and arranging techniques

  • be able to carry out compositional projects

  • have knowledge of compositional processes in teams

  • approved attendance in compulsory classes

  • 1–3 approved compulsory assignments

Teaching methods

The teaching is provided in groups, seminars and as supervision in individual and group assignments.

Expected work scope is 27 hours per credits.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

Individual portfolio submission consisting of 3 parts:

  • Part 1: A composition assignment provided to the student 3 weeks before the exam date. Range: 3-5 minutes

  • Part 2: A written reflection paper. Scope: minimum 500 words
