Course contents

In the course, the student's analytical listening ability is developed by reviewing and analyzing relevant works and musical eras with a focus on harmonic, melodic, rhythmic and production technical analyses. The student identifies the technical and sonic means in the musical material and links it to a familiar conceptual apparatus in the musical, technical and linguistic sense. In this process, style understanding and style mastery, instrument knowledge and skills are developed, in work with sound and texture as well as rhythmic patterns.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student should:

  • be able to recreate a listening example with today's technology, gathered from important stylistic periods in the history of electronic music

  • be able to describe an electronic musical process after listening to the harmonic, melodic, rhythmic and production technical concepts

  • have knowledge and experience with relevant forms of listening in electronic music

  • know the technical development of electronics as a performing musical medium

  • approved attendance in compulsory classes and seminars

  • 4-8 approved submissions / projects

Teaching methods

The teaching is organized as group teaching and individual supervision. During the course, students participate in various projects and seminars.

Parts of the teaching are compulsory. These parts are presented in Canvas at the beginning of the semester.

Expected scope of work is 27 hours per. credits.

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

The student is presented with a listening example taken from a listening syllabus and will give an oral account of the musical and technological content. Scope: approx. 30 minutes.
