Course contents

The course emphasises the combination of theory and practice. The practical aspects emphasise musical abilities and rehearsal methods which can be applied in different contexts. The theoretical aspects are based on perspectives from musicology, emphasising music as occupation and expression in society.

The course will give the students an essential introduction to the following disciplines.

• Music, culture and society.

• Preferred main instrument.

• Vocal and accompaniment training.

• Choir, musical direction and ensemble.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the student

• can document knowledge regarding musics’ relevance in culture and society and be familiar with the organisation of different activities in the voluntary field of music.

• masters instrument-specific techniques that enable musical expression which also prevents injury.

• masters essential main instrument techniques.

• can document knowledge of methods for effective musical learning, be able to organise practice and be aware of mental challenges regarding rehearsing.

• can prepare a varied musical repertoire intended for audiences of different age and background.

• masters basic vocal- and instrumental accompaniment in different settings.

• is able to collaborate efficient and goal-oriented with other musicians up to a joint performance.

• masters the role as a musical leader of different ensembles, including the rehearsing of new musical material and the providing of constructive feedback.

Examination requirements

• Approved attendance at compulsory lectures.

• Approved attendance of at least one compulsory project.

• Singing and accompaniment: Approved practical test. The content of the test is specified by the lecturer.

• Ensemble: Approved rehearsal of the course repertoire.

Teaching methods

The course is organised as lectures, group work, individual teaching, projects and seminars.

Some subjects are organised on a weekly basis, while others are concentrated in a definite time frame. Projects takes place in concentrated periods. The overview of the semester is presented at the beginning of the semester. Students are expected to work independently with subject material beyond organised teaching. This includes practice on the main instrument, the organisation and participation in ensembles, concerts, study groups and reading of literature.

Digital learning platforms and tools are used throughout the course. Students at UiA are expected to have laptops for use in learning and examinations, cp. The Examination Regulations for the University of Agder section § 12d.

The learning management platform Canvas is used as a channel of communication in the programme.

80% compulsory attendance to lectures, groups and practical training is required.

The expected workload is 27 hours pr. Credit, see Examination Regulations, section 13.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

• Practical group examination regarding the subject music, culture and society. The exam is assessed individually Duration: 30 minutes. The assignment is provided three workdays ahead of the examination.

• Individual practical exam in the main instrument. Duration: 10 minutes.

Grading: Passed / not passed.
