Digital tools have a gained a central role in education. All students and teachers interact with digital tools in one form or another. Educational institutions also extensively use digital tools as part of operations. In order to understand and use these tools appropriately, it is important understand strengths and weakness inherit in these tools.

This course will provide an insight into the theoretical background for teaching and learning using digital tools to promote these processes. Students will be exposed to an historic background of learning history and the development of learning technologies.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the courses the participants should have the ability to:

  • Understand the different roles connected to digital education environments.
  • Support students in their learning processes.
  • Have knowledge of approaches to theories on pedagogy and didactics.
  • Have knowledge about theories of motivation as it pertains to education.
  • Be familiar with methods of assessment.
  • Understand how digitization influences learning processes.
  • Understand online learning environments such as Learning Management Systems (LMS)
  • The use of UDL (Universal Design for Learning) principles.
  • Understand Cooperative and Collaborative approaches to learning.
  • Reflecting on learning processes, both individual and in groups
  • Teaching in an online environment

Teaching methods

The course is taught as a combination of lectures, flipped classroom, discussions and assignments. The expected scope of work for the average student is 200 hours.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1.

Assessment methods and criteria

Portfolio assessment counting 40 % of the total grade and a 4 day home exam counting 60 %. Graded A-F. Information about the requirements for the portfolio will be given in the study guide.
